The Outdoor Life: Keep it Cool with TerraCycle ~ Giveaway *CLOSED*

59 Flares 59 Flares ×

Spending time outdoors makes me hungry. That’s why picnics were invented. Who wants to have to go back INSIDE when you’re having so much fun OUTSIDE!?

We have a cute picnic basket that, frankly, needs to see more sunlight. However, since it’s not insulated, I can only use it for quick trip-to-the-park picnics. For longer trips, I use an insulated cooler. Terracycle, Inc. sent us a roomy Ozark Trail 36 Can Cooler with Removable Hardliner.

This particular cooler has a special hardliner – it’s made by Terracycle out of recycled Frito-Lay chip bags! And, it’s antimicrobial (no clue how that happens, but true!).

The Ozark Trail Cooler from Terracycle has zipper and mesh pockets front and side pockets, as well as a 3″ expandable top for dry storage, so you don’t have to pack just cans. The 36-can size is perfect to hold one lunch for our family – we sit it between our seats, and I can grab snacks as we go and zip it back up! If we happen to stop, we don’t have to unpack the whole car, I just lift out the cooler and we’re ready to eat!

Terracycle, Inc. runs on a pretty amazing concept! They collect your trash to make something useful. Billions of used chip bags and juice boxes are discarded yearly! Terracycle saves them and makes crazy funky products! Pretty resourceful!

Among popular Terracycle products are the bright and catchy CapriSun bags (perfect for beach-weather summers, day camps, school lunches!). And mini-speakers made from M&Ms and Starburst wrappers (need no batteries and can play from an iPod or MP3 player!). Even a cool ClifBar wrapper duffel bag! Terracycle products are a creative pop culture addition to the recycled product trend!

I am amazed Terracycle finds a use for our garbage – old film, bike chains, and even vinyl billboard signs get turned into bags, frames, notebooks, clipboards, park benches – their list of products is vast!

Check out Terracycle on Facebook and Twitter to see how you can send them your trash!

BUY IT: Get this cooler at Wal-mart! Look for sizes 6-can, 24-can, 32-can, and a rolling 42-can cooler! Prices range from $6-30.

DISCOUNT: Bring Polly-O and Kraft String Cheese packaging to your local Six Flags for a discount on park tickets! Or sign up for one of the MANY waste collection brigades, incentives, and contests. You could earn money for your favorite non-profit by sending Terracycle your garbage!

WIN IT: Terracycle, Inc. wants to spread the word about their fun products by giving away ONE super-cute CapriSun Lunchboxes! ARV $15.

I love the thought of upcycling and I have been saving any and all capri sun type drink pouches to try to make them into a bag (I found a cute tutorial) and people keep laughing when I tell them but terracycle is proof positive that it is entirely possible and that I am NOT off my rocker (for a change ;) )

phxbneJuly 20, 2011 - 12:52 pm

I love the fact that Terracylce reuses packaging, especially food packaging! Its nice to see a company create useful stuff out of trash! Its also a way to keep trash out of landfills!

BeccaJuly 19, 2011 - 9:12 pm

I love the way they’ve put “reuse” into action. That little cooler is so cute, and the long handles make it perfect for packing a lunch to the park or the pool.

billieJuly 19, 2011 - 1:46 pm

I love the terracycle concept and the caprisun lunchbox! it’s so funny because my mom didn’t buy capri sun when I was a kid because she thought they were too sugary and expensive, and now that i’m grown a part of me still wants them! ;)

PaulineJuly 19, 2011 - 12:11 pm

I love their concept. It is a great way to recycle material over again. I like the their large capri tote bag – (emscout9 at Hotmail dot com)

Dawn HicksJuly 19, 2011 - 2:23 am

I just tuned in to National Geographic and found a program on Terracycle, and I am amazed!!! I had no idea people were doing this. I can’t wait to tell all my friends and it would ne great to win this, so I could show them as well!! This is great!!!

Joy NewlanJuly 18, 2011 - 11:50 pm

a local bookstore (i am pretty sure) sells these products and i always wondered how it worked! neat to see how!

stacie fourrouxJuly 18, 2011 - 1:01 pm

I love what Terracycle does with everyday trash! I wish all company’s could think the way terracycle does, afterall its our childrens future were talking about! My son has joined the Caprisun Pouch Brigade and as he has seen them on the computer it would be great to present him with this lunchbox on his very first official day of school for Kindergarten! Thank you and continue the good work!!

Anna-LeighJuly 18, 2011 - 12:51 pm

I think the terracycle concept is pretty awesome. I know some of the school around here collect those items for recycling. That would make a great little cooler for the park or short beach trips!

CrystalJuly 18, 2011 - 11:50 am

I am such a huge fan of Terracycle! I used to host drives for them in college for my honor society. I remember when I first saw the worm tea in old soda bottles and thinking “What a cool idea!”. I love Terracycle because they don’t only reuse materials that would otherwise go to landfills, but they get people involved AND their products are great advertising for reusing and recycling your “trash”. I would love to see some funky jewelry made from recycled products available from Terracycle. I think jewelry would be so much fun and would get lots of attention!

Kristen EbyJuly 18, 2011 - 11:36 am

I love the Terracycle products! They make such great recycled items from oour old chip and juice packets! I really would love the cooler or even some of their lunch bags!

Sarah RossJuly 18, 2011 - 8:46 am

I love Terracycle! I have a capri-sun bag, and my son’s school participates in the recycling program. I think it’s brilliant.

TrishJuly 17, 2011 - 10:52 pm

Love the Terracycle program! Our school recycles juice pouches and glue stick containers and we are hopefully going to expand even more this year!!

ZeneJuly 17, 2011 - 8:50 pm

I think it’s a great idea! They should offer a discount for turning in supplies to be recycled. Spottedjagiwar at yahoo dot com

Kristen fosterJuly 17, 2011 - 8:14 pm

Love the capris sun inch boxes….but was disappointed when I went to order some school supplies on line and everything was sold out! Great idea/concept….but make sure you have enough to go around! Ps….also could,t buy the kites either…they were also sold out! Hope u restock soon!!!!

JennyJuly 17, 2011 - 6:49 pm

My school started sending in drink pouches this last year. Would love to have a lunch tote so we could show the children what is made with the pouches.

Sandra HolsoppleJuly 17, 2011 - 5:10 pm

My Daisy Girl Scout troop is part of the Capri Sun drink pouch brigade. The girls get really excited when they turn in their pouches! I was so proud of them last school year because each of them recruited their classmates to start collecting for the troop also. My favorite items produced by Terracycle are the school supplies. And I’d have to say the garden supplies come in a very close second as my favorites. I love Terracycles concept of finding a new use for practically everything. It has helped me, my family and the girls in the troop realize they can give new life to almost any piece of “trash” and therefore keep it out of the landfill. My girls are learning that even though they may be small, they can have a HUGE impact on the world.

Sandy KleinJuly 17, 2011 - 4:41 pm

My Grandson’s School collects capri sun and other brand drink pouches to sent to Terracycle. This year his school raised $208 for the PTA to help fund field trips for next year. My Daughter finally convinced the school to participate in Terracycles program mid year. When he comes to visit us he makes sure we save all the pouches to bring back home with him so his Mom can send them in the next box,

This would be a great gift for me to give him so he can see what happens to the pouches after they get sent to Terracycle.

Tabitha McElreathJuly 17, 2011 - 4:36 pm

We love Terracycle and all the hard work that you do over there. It has inspired our son to figure out how to recycle the things he uses. Would love to win the Capri Sun cooler as it’s not just his favorite drink, but he would be the envy of the kids at school to show up with his lunch in it. Would make a great conversation piece between the kids and the teachers. Trying to bring Terracycle Brigades to his school this next school year. Some of the parents on the PTA, teachers and staff were very interested on learning more and getting into it here.

Patricia Kettering-Pierce-PierceJuly 17, 2011 - 4:32 pm

TerraCycle has great customer service! Problems are explained and handled promtly! Looking forward
to additional brigades.

CandyJuly 17, 2011 - 4:25 pm

I’ve known about Terracycle for a couple years now. My son’s school does a few of the brigades. The only product I have bought so far, was an M&M and Skittles kite. My boys love it.

sarahcorneJuly 17, 2011 - 4:14 pm

I love Terracycle. I started the program about 2 years ago at our school and we have saved many drink boxes and glue sticks and pens from the landfills! I would love to win this so I can use it as a giveaway to encourage recycling when the kids go back to school this Fall. What I like about it is it has raised awareness of all the disposable items we use that we end up putting in landfills. It prompts us to consider more ecofriendly options for lunches every tiime I mail in a big box of recyclables. My kids even pull drink boxes out of the trash whenever we see them! I have created little recyclers! The small change has added up and helped the school as well. The best part is that it has taught the kids a lesson about recycling.

TonyaJuly 17, 2011 - 3:57 pm

I love Terracycle……….how awesome the things they do.

Melanie HothJuly 17, 2011 - 3:25 pm

I love terracycle! I think it is great that they have found such an awesome way to deal with trash and recycling! I already own a capri-sun tote and a Lays notebook. I like the children’s garden toy and the M7M’s eco speakers, but I think I would put most use to a lunch box or something insulated because my husband needs one right now. Poor boy has been using plastic walmart sacks for his lunch, lol.

MelissaJuly 17, 2011 - 3:20 pm

I love Terracycle and have been running several brigades at the school where I teach. It has taught the students a lot and has made a lot of money for the school. Which is something we desperately needed with all of the budget cuts. The students now enjoy being recycling police. Telling anyone and everyone not to throw out our precious juice pouches, chip bags, etc. A parent was telling me that one of my students goes around the neighborhood asking the neighbors for items that we can recycle and that the neighbors call them to say they have recycling for her to pick up. :-)
I ran a contest where I gave away Terracycle products (chip bag totes, juice pouch pencil cases) and the students absolutely loved seeing the products that their items are made into.

Teresa FernandezJuly 17, 2011 - 3:18 pm

I came across Terracycle when my school started the Capri Sun recycling program. It was just a success and the kids really loved it that I started it at my son’s school. I bought some pencil pouches and other cool items to use as rewards for the student body. I would love to have some items to be able to give the teachers as a reward too.
Thanks for helping keep us “green”!

Michelle FaberJuly 17, 2011 - 3:07 pm

I love TerraCycle honestly the best recycling concept I have ever seen. Many kids use the items that TerraCycle collects and make cool things. My kids love the fact they are saving the environment and have a cool product to take with them, that no other kids have. Also its a great way to promote going “green” and getting all the kids involved. Thanks for a great giveaway

Brenda UsdinJuly 17, 2011 - 2:46 pm

We love Terracycle. Our school PTA start collecting for various brigades this past January. As much as I’d love to have that insulated picnic cooler for my personal use, I’d rather have the Capri Sun insulated lunch cooler or any of the candy backpacks to use as prize incentives for the kids. I also wish you had school discount program for bulk purchases of those types of items so that we could purchase for an entire classroom or grade. Thanks Terracycle. Keep up the good work. Our kids will appreciate that you are helping to keep the earth a more beautiful place.

Tracy WhitmireJuly 17, 2011 - 2:38 pm

I love TerraCycle and the way they repurpose everything they can. Would love this cooler. Frito lay chip bag liner is so cool.

TracyJuly 17, 2011 - 2:37 pm

Terracycle does great work! I love recycled stuff and Terracycle does a great job of reusing wrappers and stuff by making great products that are usable and sturdy. The lunch bag would be used by my daughter for school or for when we go on a daycation to a park, the beach or amusement park type place.

JhitomiJuly 17, 2011 - 2:02 pm

I love their concept of using trash to create useful and pretty items. On their site they have a great M&Ms picture frame. What a fun idea.

Susan LaddJuly 17, 2011 - 11:02 am

Hope to win :) Like on FB.

Terri S.July 17, 2011 - 10:44 am

I think TerraCycle’s program is wonderful. I love seeing how they take things (chips bags, plastic bottles, even toothbrushes) to recycle and turn them into useful products. I would love to have a set of the High Back Park Benches. :-)

Alicia E.July 17, 2011 - 9:46 am

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to enter twice…I just didnt see my entry at the top! OOps, please don’t disqualify me.

Alicia E.July 17, 2011 - 9:45 am

I’m an environmental educator, and I’ve always been an avid recycler. It’s amazing that Terracycle has been able to find a market for items that used to be completely not recyclable. I bring products like these into classrooms to show children that trash doesn’t always have to be thrown into a landfill, and that there are environmentally responsible things they can do with their candy wrappers and juice boxes.

Alicia E.July 17, 2011 - 9:42 am

I’m an environmental educator, and I’ve always been an avid recycler, and I’m amazed at seeing what Terracycle can do with our discarded candy wrappers and juice boxes that usually can’t be reused. I bring products like these into the classroom to show kids that they can find cool uses for what’s usually considered trash, and be environmentally responsible at the same time.

Amanda AlvaradoJuly 17, 2011 - 2:56 am

This is so cool! I think dd would end up with this lunchbox since she loves Capri Suns (or kool-aid as she calls it). I like the M&M insulated cooler. Did you see the eco boom boxes?!?! That is just weird! LOL

Brandon WhiteJuly 17, 2011 - 12:42 am

This a really neat program. it makes the world more greener. its also really cool that they reuse the wrappers and the fruit drink pouches to make useful things.
I would use this cooler to pack my lunches in or I would take a case of pop in it.

Crunchy Beach MamaJuly 16, 2011 - 5:12 pm

I think TerraCycle is cool and jealous you got a review from them! :)

This little cooler would be fun to take to my boys ballgames and tote around.

Amanda CJuly 16, 2011 - 12:11 pm

I think that is a great program. Recycling items that would typically be tossed but can be used to make something so cute! This really gets the creative juices flowing, I cannot wait to try something like this.

Linda KomondyJuly 16, 2011 - 9:01 am

What a great idea – recycling into products that are useful and obviously recycled! It’s a great way to get more people involved with recycling – I can only imagine the number of conversations started as a result of using these products! I especially like the Woven Market Bag and the Circuit Board Clipboards!

Mechele JohnsonJuly 16, 2011 - 12:10 am

I love Terracycles products and their ideology behind them. I think the use of Capri Sun pckages is so awesome, cute, and green! Me and my daughter have actually tried to make stuff with them, however, we just weren’t crafty enough!

I love cpmpanies who try to help this world be a better place. Start now and it will help furture generations. As a grandparent I am very concerned about their future. I will look for your products every time I go into the store, its a good product so its a win win situation.(and I will save the packages.

debbie mJuly 15, 2011 - 12:07 pm

Oh my gosh!!! I saw these at a field trip with my students and loved them! I forgot their name…now I remember!!! I LOVE these!!! They had a pencil pouch made out of Capri Sun packages. Would love, love, love one of my own!!!

Robin HJuly 15, 2011 - 6:59 am

I am all for any company that tries to make our world greener! Will be “liking” this company and keeping track of their new products. They need to talk to the recycle company so we can blue bin products they use!

JackieJuly 15, 2011 - 1:58 am

What a neat product! I love the “green” idea. I have a special needs 5 year old who loves caprisun!! So I think this will be perfect to use for her “must haves” on the go!
Thanks for the article. Made me want to go check it out for sure!

Regina DuShaneJuly 15, 2011 - 1:57 am
