Funshine! UVSkinz Sun Clothing ~ Giveaway *CLOSED*

Did know May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month? So let’s do something about it by dressing ourselves, and our children, safely in the sun!

When a child gets a severe sunburn, they double their risk of getting skin cancer as an adult (ouch, I remember two terrible sunburns I got in Orlando when I was seven!). The bittersweet fact is, 95% of skin cancer cases are preventable - but you have to PRE-vent with the right sun protection.

Personally, I try to stay out of the sun – I just freckle or burn, so I do NOT need extra sun exposure. I wear hats, sunscreen and avoid mid-day sun as much as possible. But I’m bothered by the chemical content of most sunscreens. I am not sure lathering that all over my skin is the answer. It certainly is NOT for my baby’s skin!

So I’ve been looking into getting our entire family outfitted with UV protective clothing, like the awesome sun shirts at UV Skinz. We were sent the Sharky-b Kids UV Swim shirt for our baby boy and we LOVE it – its cute print makes it a fun top even when water is not involved.

The fabric of the sharky shirt is smooth and tightly woven. That’s where the UV protection comes from (UPF 50+, blocking 98% of the sun’s harmful rays!). UV Skinz does NOT use any chemicals or lotions to add sun protection. Yet the microfiber fabric is chlorine resistant to give longer lasting wear (awesome, b/c we’re at the pool for swim lessons!). I love the silky feel of this shirt. I bet it feels really good against his skin. Plus, it’s my opinion that it keeps him warmer in the water when we’re at swim lessons.

And it slides right on over my son’s head because the neck opening is slightly larger than most sun shirts. Which is another feature I love about UVSkinz – they are designed with a comfy fit, so they aren’t supposed to be SKIN tight. (Which is why I’m ordering my own shirt from them! I hate the claustrophically tight shirts I’ve tried from other brands!).

Both of my parents have had skin cancer or melanoma, so I’m very diligent about all of this! Plus, I never tan…I just turn from white – to red – and back to white again. Hoping my daughter is spared the pasty white skin!
