Spring Cleaning: DIY Sweeper Clothes by Caboose Cloth ~ giveaway *CLOSED*

Since we have all hardwood floors, I use our Swiffer a lot. Nearly daily. We also have some microfiber sweepers too. And believe me, I got TIRED of buying throw-away Swiffer cloths, and I kept running out of my FEW microfiber cloths.

So I looked into making some myself. Surprisingly they are super easy. Here is how:

  • Buy some non-pilling fleece fabric. Or check the remnants bin at Joann’s or Walmart – you can usually find TONS of fleece in good sizes.
  • Cut rectangles that are 10.5×9 inches – you don’t even need to sew them!
  • Attach to sweeper and dust away!

Seriously, it’s that easy. I made myself a little stack of them, because I need them upstairs and downstairs. Then I made my sister, mother, and sister-in-law one each, but will probably make them more. You could probably use old towels, t-shirts or flannel, but then you’d have to sew the edges to stop fraying.

I think they work pretty well – definitely great for dust and hair sweep-ups. The don’t “pick up” the small gritty crumbs like a disposable Swiffer cloth would because they don’t have those grooves. But you can just kinda push them in front of the sweeper.

They wash up pretty well with little shrinkage that I can see. I have just started making/using these, so time will tell how they hold up with daily use.

I’m saving money. And get to clean the floor with some funky printed clothes! (Yeah, to go along with my posh cleaning gloves! Oh yeah! Fancy that!).

I am thinking of stocking these in my Caboose Cloth Etsy store. And that is why I am GIVING a set of 3 fleece sweeper cloths to one of you! I’d like you to try them and let me know how they work for you. Especially long term, like a couple months of regular use!

I am so happy you’re doing this! :) I’ve been thinking of the same thing and have wondered what fabrics work best. Thanks for this giveaway! :)
One thing I do to save money with our cleaning is make my own all-purpose disinfectant cleaner with vinegar. Also, when our bath towels start to wear down and get holes, I cut them up to use as rags. I also use worn socks and t-shirts for this! I have a whole bin of rags that I can grab rather than paper towels to clean up anything from a spill in the kitchen to an entire bathroom.

  • Martha Payne says:

My best tip is to use rags instead of paper towels…saves you a bundle and better for the environment. Thanks for the contest! codisweepstakes2 (@) gmail(dot)com

I also used some microfiber that I bought for making extra inserts/doublers for my son’s diapers and the microfiber works GREAT for picking up the crumbs, etc and trapping them. Fleece is a great, cheap solution that you don’t have to sew. I’m really excited about that part! And for spring cleaning, I’m trying to find things to make it “fun” I was using an old kids’ nailbrush (shaped like a whale) to scrub spots on the floor and my boys were arguing over who got to help me! Make it fun and the kids actually want to help!

  • Brittney Minor says:

I always use old socks to dust or cloths to clean up messes. I hate using paper towels and creating waste.

  • SnowflakeDay (Audra) says:

I love to Spring clean; I’m one of those freaky people who love to organize and reorganize. I guess my best tip for getting the Spring clean done is to take it room by room. I find if I do one room a week for a week, top to bottom, then I don’t feel like it’s taken forever and I’m more thorough. It’s hard to try and clean the entire house in a day. I’m on a way over to your Etsy shop. These are great; I buy boxes of these (namebrand) and it never occurred to me to use cloth. :-)

For spring cleaning I get my husband to clean. LOL Actually, I use a lot of vinegar w/water and lemon juice and baking soda for the tough spots. Can’t wait to get some cleaning done…especially the windows!

  • Trisha W. says:

We use our old prefold diapers for cleaning a lot of things around the house. That saves money.

  • Melisa says:

Tip for spring cleaning? Have hubby leave for the day, and take the kids. Best way to accomplish anything :)

  • T Rex Mom says:

    Cleaver, cleaver, cleaver.

I just did a good push of cleaning the past couple days. We have a good chunk of hard wood floors that I used my microfiber sweeper on last night. I never use a swiffer, though.

By the way, I’m looking forward to the bory r cool event next week.

My spring cleaning has not started yet and sadly probably won’t start until after Easter. Even sadder is that it will likely take me all summer. We’re planning on doing one room at a time and making a list of all that needs to be done in that particular room.

  • Amy Hint says:

I start at one corner of the room and follow around to the right when cleaning. It is more effecient and causes less distractions. I have my weekly cleaning routine that includes dusting, vacuuming, wiping finger prints, etc. My biggest tip is to not allow shoes to be worn in the house. You would be shocked at how much dirt this will cut down on. Plus, our shoes are just plain dirty on the bottoms. I saw a test where they had more bacteria than a public toilet seat. : P
Once a month, I wipe baseboards, vacuum couch, clean refrigerator, etc. This keeps me from having to do a huge Spring Cleaning, although I will still wash the curtains come spring. For me, it’s about maintaining so that I don’t get behind and have to do a huge overhaul!
I love Swiffers, so it would be great to add these to my routine. : )

  • Leslie T says:

I wish I had good spring cleaning tips. My philosophy of cleaning is if I get fed up with how it looks, I clean it. I don’t clean on a schedule (do the bathrooms every tuesday). If one bathroom looks dirty, it gets cleaned, if that is twice a week it is twice a week for one, or twice a month for another. I do sweep and vacuum daily because my little guy is crawling and attempting walking.

  • I hate to clean, I usually pick a day and clean everything. I like to use vinegar and baking soda to avoid the harsh chemicals.

  • Honestly I hate cleaning more than anything. But I have to clean constantly because I run a home daycare. I wonder if those cloths will pick up glitter??? LOL

  • sarah shult says:

my strategy is to remove clutter and unused items in the spring. It cleans my house out and I really dislike clutter so it helps to relieve the stress of seeing junk around the house

  • Aimee E. says:

I’ve been taking my huge canvas bags into the basement and loading them up with stuff to dump in the recycle cart. It’s gratifying to bring up a big load of stuff, and it’s easy to carry up and down the stairs.
